Goa Government Invokes National Security Act Amid Rising Crime Wave

The Goa government has taken drastic measures to curb escalating law and order concerns, invoking the National Security Act (NSA) for three months across North and South Goa districts. This move empowers district collectors to detain individuals deemed threats to public order or national security without formal charges.

Reports indicate approximately 140 habitual offenders in North Goa and 105 in South Goa are on the radar. The decision follows a surge in violent incidents, including gang clashes and assaults, prompting authorities to take stringent action ¹ ² ³.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant emphasized the government’s commitment to tackling anti-social elements, stating that strict action will be taken against those creating nuisances in the state. The NSA advisory board, led by former Bombay High Court Judge Utkarsh V Bakre, will review detention orders within three weeks ⁴ ⁵ ⁶.
