Oil Spill Near Siolim Church Sparks Panic, Mapusa Fire Service Averts Major Mishap
MAPUSA, Nov 7: A major accident was averted on Friday afternoon after a large quantity of oil spilled on the road near Siolim Church, turning the busy stretch into a slippery death trap for two-wheeler riders. The incident was reported at 3.52 pm, after commuters noticed vehicles skidding and alerted the authorities. Within minutes, a team from the Mapusa Fire Station rushed to the spot and took control of the situation.
The team was led by Sub Officer Shri P. J. Kannaik, who immediately cordoned off the affected stretch and began cleaning operations to prevent further mishaps.”The oil had spread across a large portion of the road. If not cleaned in time, it could have led to a serious pile-up, especially for bikers. Our priority was to secure the road and restore traffic safely,” said Sub Officer Kannaik.Fire personnel used sand and absorbent material to soak up the oil and washed the road thoroughly.
Traffic movement was regulated for nearly 45 minutes during the operation, leading to a temporary jam on the Siolim-Mapusa road.No injuries or accidents were reported, thanks to the swift response of the fire service and the alertness of local residents.Police have now begun an inquiry to find out how the oil spilled on the road and whether it leaked from a passing tanker or was dumped illegally.
Local residents have demanded that CCTV cameras be installed near the church junction to identify such culprits and prevent a repeat of the incident.
