Mapusa Market Set for Makeover: Flower and Pottery Sections to be Revamped, Vendors to Get New Facilities
MAPUSA: The charm of the iconic Mapusa Friday Market will stay, but its facilities are set for a major upgrade. An inspection of Mapusa Market was held by Mapusa MLA Joshua D’Souza along with Tourism Minister and Porvorim MLA Shri Rohan Khaunte to review the planned refurbishment of the flower market and pottery market. The Mapusa Friday Market is not just a market for Mapshekars and Bardezkars, it is an experience for visitors from across Goa and beyond. Officials said the refurbishment aims to preserve that traditional charm while making it more attractive and welcoming for both vendors and the public.

The work will be taken up in two phases. The first phase will focus on the flower market, with plans for a new roof, additional structures, better seating arrangements for flower sellers and improved lighting in coordination with the Tourism Department. The second phase will focus on the pottery market, with a new structure and improved facilities for pottery sellers. In an era where online shopping is becoming the norm, officials said these improvements will help keep the traditional market relevant and appealing. Temporary arrangements will be made for vendors during the work to minimise disruption to their daily business, they assured. Present during the inspection were Mapusa Merchant Association President Shripad Sawant, members of the association, consultants and officials from the Tourism Department.
Officials said collective efforts are key to preserving the market’s character, supporting local livelihoods and strengthening its appeal as a tourist destination.
