Several temples of Goa were destroyed during Portuguese rule, says CM Sawant
PANAJI: Goa would have had temples comparable to those in south India had the Portuguese not arrived in the coastal state, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said here on Friday.
CM Sawant, while announcing the restoration of the historic Koti Tirth site in Divar, said several temples were destroyed during Portuguese rule.
“Had the Portuguese not come to Goa, we would have seen temples in Goa similar to those in south India,” Sawant said.
Tourism Minister, Rohan Khaunte, MLAs Premendra Shet, Rodolfo Fernandes, Rajesh Faldessai Social Worker Cumbharjua Constituency and Jit Arolkar, Rajya Sabha MP, Sadanand Shet Tanavade,Former MLA, . Damu Naik, Secretary of the Department of Archaeology, Shri. Prasad Lolayekar, IAS, Padmini Foundation Chairperson Sulakshana Sawant, Restoration Committee Convenor, Prof. Bhushan Bhave, members of the Saptakoteshwar Koti Teerth Restoration Committee, and residents of Divar were present on the occasion.
