Greek Rower Petros Gkaidatzis Wins World Gold in Amsterdam After European Title

Greek rower Petros Gkaidatzis won gold in the Lightweight Men’s Single Sculls at the World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam on Thursday, adding a world title to the European crown he captured in Varese, Italy, earlier this month.

The 26-year-old, a Paris 2024 Olympic bronze medallist, clocked 6:47.77 over the 2,000-meter distance to secure Greece’s first gold medal at the championships.

Germany’s Fabio Kress made the fastest start and led the field early, but Gkaidatzis moved ahead at the 750-meter mark and soon opened a lead of more than a length. Kress eventually finished fourth in 6:52.62.

Uruguay’s Felipe Kluver Ferreira took silver in 6:51.50, while Mexico’s Alexis Lopez-Garcia won bronze in 6:52.06.

Earlier, Greece’s Gavriela Lioliou and Lila Mouratidou won silver in the Lightweight Women’s Double Sculls, giving Greece its first medal of the championships.
