Preventive Healthcare Starts with a Check-Up: Manipal Hospital Goa Joins Hands with North Goa Administration
PANAJI: The Office of the Collector and District Magistrate, North Goa, in association with Manipal Hospital Goa and the Directorate of Health Services, organised a health camp at the Collectorate Office Premises, Panaji, on Friday. The camp focused on preventive health checks and early identification of common health conditions among the public.
The camp was attended by Mr. Ankit Yadav (IAS), Collector, North Goa; Dr. Medha Salkar, Director of Health Services; and Dr. Shekar Salkar, Chief of Oncology, Manipal Hospital Goa, who highlighted the importance of accessible preventive healthcare and timely screening.
The camp offered a range of health checks, including thyroid screening, ECG, bone density assessment, body mass index (BMI), random blood sugar, blood pressure, height and weight measurements and eye screening. Women above 40 years were also offered Pap smear screening, a test used to detect early changes in the cervix that may lead to cervical cancer.
Participants also had access to general physician consultations, Obstetrics and Gynaecology consultations, ophthalmology consultations and vision screening. Reading glasses were provided to people in need.
Mr. Ankit Yadav (IAS), Collector, North Goa, said “Regular health check-ups are important because they can help identify health concerns at an early stage, even before symptoms become noticeable. Initiatives like this health camp make preventive health checks more accessible to the community. I would like to thank Manipal Hospitals Goa and the Directorate of Health Services for their support in organising this camp.”
Dr. Medha Salkar, Director of Health Services, said “Good vision is essential for our daily activities, yet eye health is often overlooked. Regular eye check-ups can help identify vision problems early and ensure timely care. As part of this camp, reading glasses will also be provided to those who need them, helping people manage their day-to-day activities more comfortably.”
Speaking about the importance of such initiatives, Dr. Shekar Salkar, Chief of Oncology, Manipal Hospital Goa, said, “Many health conditions can remain unnoticed until they begin to affect daily life. Regular screening gives people an opportunity to identify possible health concerns early and seek appropriate medical advice. Camps like this also make basic preventive checks more accessible, especially for people who may otherwise postpone them.”
The initiative brought together government health authorities and medical professionals to promote regular health screening and timely medical consultation. The range of services was designed to address common health concerns across different age groups, with specific screenings for women and vision-related needs.
