‘Nasha Mukta Bharat’ Has Failed; BJP Has Turned Goa into ‘Nasha Yukt Goa’: Amarnath Panjikar

Panaji: The shocking revelations emerging from the recent reports exposing the alarming spread of narcotics across Goa have brought immense disgrace to the State. The BJP Government has failed in its primary responsibility of protecting Goa and has, through its inaction and incompetence, allowed Goa to acquire the dangerous reputation of becoming a “Drug Capital” instead of preserving its identity as India’s premier tourism destination, alleged Goa Pradesh Congress Committee Media & Communication Department Chairman Amarnath Panjikar.

Amarnath Panjikar said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s much-publicised “Nasha Mukta Bharat Abhiyan” has completely failed in Goa. Under the BJP Government led by Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant, Goa has tragically been transformed from a globally admired tourism destination into “Nasha Yukt Goa.” The growing drug menace is a direct indictment of the BJP Government’s failure to implement its own flagship anti-drug campaign.

The reports indicate that the illegal drug trade in Goa is worth hundreds of crores of rupees annually. The narcotics network has infiltrated national highways, coastal belts, tourist destinations, educational institutions and even affluent residential areas. The menace has spread across every section of society—from women and youth to students and tourists—reflecting the complete collapse of law and order under the BJP Government.

Amarnath Panjikar said that with Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant himself holding the Home portfolio, Goa has virtually been surrendered to drug cartels. While the Police and Anti-Narcotics agencies occasionally conduct raids, the Government has miserably failed to dismantle the organised drug syndicates operating across the State. The masterminds continue to roam freely while only minor offenders are apprehended, exposing the Government’s lack of political will to eradicate the menace.

“The BJP Government’s much-publicised ‘Double Engine Government’ has delivered not development but an explosion of drugs, organised crime, casino culture, land scams and corruption. Today, the biggest stain on Goa’s image is the growing narcotics empire flourishing under the BJP’s watch. This has severely damaged Goa’s reputation as a safe and world-class tourism destination while sending a deeply disturbing message to visitors across the globe,” Panjikar stated.

He further said that the increasing addiction among students and youth, the easy availability of drugs near educational institutions, the flourishing black market operating under the guise of tourism, and the expanding network of international drug syndicates pose a grave threat to Goa’s future. This is no longer merely a law-and-order issue but a direct assault on the State’s social fabric and the future of an entire generation. Every seizure, every overdose, every drug-related crime and every young life destroyed stands as a damning testimony to the BJP Government’s failure to protect Goa.

The Goa Pradesh Congress Committee has demanded:

* A judicial inquiry headed by a retired High Court Judge into the entire narcotics network operating in Goa.
* Immediate identification and prosecution of all those providing political patronage and protection to drug mafias.
* A special anti-drug enforcement drive covering schools, colleges, tourist destinations and coastal areas.
* The establishment of a permanent Special Anti-Narcotics Task Force with clearly defined public accountability.
* Comprehensive awareness, rehabilitation and counselling programmes to protect Goa’s youth from the growing menace of drug addiction.
* A White Paper from the Government on the implementation, expenditure, outcomes and failures of the “Nasha Mukta Bharat Abhiyan” in Goa.

“The BJP Government has converted the Prime Minister’s slogan of ‘Nasha Mukta Bharat’ into the grim reality of ‘Nasha Yukt Goa.’ This is not merely a policy failure; it is a betrayal of Goa’s youth, its families and its future. The Congress Party will not remain a silent spectator while the next generation is sacrificed at the altar of the drug mafia,” Panjikar asserted.
