Goa Fishermen Gear Up As Fishing Season Resumes From August 1

Panaji: Goa’s fishermen are gearing up to return to sea from August 1 with the end of the two-month fishing ban, but rough seas and a labour crunch are likely to push back full-scale operations. Boat and trawler owners have already started repairing and readying their vessels at jetties across the coast, hoping for a good season ahead after the annual monsoon break. However, local fisherman Siddharth Gaonkar said that while the ban officially lifts on August 1, most fishermen are expected to venture out only after August 15 due to rough weather conditions at sea.

Despite the anticipated delay, fishermen remain optimistic and are looking forward to a strong catch, once operations resume fully. The annual 60-day fishing ban was in force from May 31 to July 31. It is imposed during the southwest monsoon to allow fish breeding and ensure long-term sustainability of marine resources.
