How Goa’s IT Knowledge Centres are rewriting the Digital Workforce of Tomorrow
Imagine a world where everyone uses technology, but you’re left out simply because you don’t have the opportunity to learn it. While the digital revolution has transformed everyday life for millions, many people in rural communities still face barriers to accessing digital skills. Recognising this challenge, the Government of Goa, under the leadership of Hon’ble Chief Minister, Dr. Pramod Sawant and Hon’ble ITE&C Minister, Rohan A. Khaunte, is working to ensure that every citizen has the opportunity to participate in the digital economy.
At the heart of this grassroots revolution are the IT Knowledge Centres (ITKCs), an impactful initiative under the Department of Information Technology, Electronics & Communications (DITE&C), implemented by InfoTech Corporation of Goa Limited (ITG). Formulated and launched in 2010, the core mission of the ITKC scheme is to democratise technology by providing essential computer skills to rural youth, homemakers and citizens belonging to the SC/ST communities. By offering diverse, job-oriented IT training courses and structured programmes, the initiative aims to make at least one person in every single Goan family an IT literate.
Currently, five empanelled ITKCs are operational across the talukas of Bardez, Ponda, Salcete, Quepem and Canacona. To meet the demands of today’s job market, the centres offer 13 industry-oriented courses spanning office productivity, networking, cybersecurity, digital media, animation, robotics, IoT and graphic design. Learners can pursue programmes ranging from Diploma in ICT Skills and Office Management to specialised certifications in Ethical Hacking, Cisco Networking, Blender 3D, Adobe Illustrator and Advanced Robotics.
These courses are provided free of cost to SC/ST students, as well as students residing in the mining areas through support from the District Mineral Foundation Trust (DMFT). Additionally, the specialised Cyber Saksharta course is offered free for women under the Mahila Digital Sashaktikaran Scheme. For general category students the fees range from Rs 500 to 15000, depending on the course.
Inside these centres, students learn by interacting with modern desktop computers, high-speed internet, projectors and advanced multimedia equipment. Sharing about how trainers regularly review and update the coursework based on market demands and emerging technologies, Meghlee Fernandes, a computer faculty member at the Infotech Training Academy LLP in Curchorem explains, “We regularly review and update the curriculum based on current industry requirements, emerging technologies and market demands. We emphasise hands-on learning with current tools and real-world projects so that students gain practical experience aligned with industry trends.”
Spanning from 3 to 26 weeks, these courses offer certificates upon completion. Since 2010, the initiative has awarded approximately 12,000 total course certifications. True impact, however, is best measured through the voices of the students whose career outlooks and confidence have transformed.
Rupali Velip, an AV Mixing student at Curchorem Centre, shares, “Joining the ITKC expanded my career outlook by connecting my commerce studies with essential Digital Media skills. I learned how to create professional videos, edit soundtracks, add background music and export high-quality content. These skills are in demand for content creators, YouTubers and digital marketing companies.”
Similarly, Shreyashi Shirish Gaunkar shares how she conquered her fear of technology through the Adobe Illustrator course. “It opened my career path from traditional art to digital illustration. At ITKC, I learned Adobe Illustrator tools like vector drawings, logo designs, colour editing and creating digital artwork for printing and web. These skills will help me get a job in areas like graphic designing, branding and digital content.”
Through the ITKC network, the Department of Information Technology, Electronics & Communications (DITE&C) is successfully equipping its youth and women with affordable, market-ready expertise, unlocking paths to high-paying careers that can lift families out of generational poverty and ensuring their voices shape Goa’s digital landscape.
