Governor Lauds Fontainhas Heritage Conservation During Visit to Panjim Pousada & Panjim Inn

PANAJI: Goa Governor Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju and Suneela Gajapathi Raju on Wednesday toured the heritage precinct of Fontainhas and praised ongoing efforts to preserve the Latin Quarter’s unique character while making it commercially viable. The Governor visited two restored heritage properties   Welcom Heritage Panjim Pousada and Welcom Heritage Panjim Inn — and spent over an hour interacting with Eng. Ajit Sukhija, Managing Partner, a pioneer in adaptive reuse of heritage buildings in Goa. The discussion centered on conserving historic structures, repurposing them for tourism, and showcasing Goan objets d’art and heritage artefacts. Both the Governor and First Lady appreciated the “love, care and effort” invested in retaining the original architecture while giving the buildings a new lease of life.

“The Governor immediately connected with the vision behind adaptive reuse. He noted that such models can help preserve Goa’s identity while creating sustainable tourism opportunities,” said a Shukija As part of the tour, areas of Ward 17 under CCP that were spruced up for the visit were also highlighted. The rapid civic works completed ahead of the Governor’s visit were acknowledged as an example of inter-agency coordination

.Sanjeev Sardesai facilitated the Governor’s visit to Fontainhas, aimed at showcasing the historic ward as a key cultural tourism destination.The Governor’s visit is being seen as a shot in the arm for heritage conservation efforts in Panaji, with emphasis on balancing preservation with economic activity.
