Michael Lobo Backs Zero-Tolerance on Drunk Driving, Demands Crackdown on Illegal Rental Vehicles
Calangute MLA Michael Lobo has welcomed the Goa government’s strict action against drunk driving and called for a zero-tolerance policy, stating that offenders should face stringent legal action, including imprisonment, to improve road safety.
Speaking to the media, Lobo said a strong message must go out across the country that drunken driving in Goa will not be tolerated. He stressed that strict enforcement is essential, particularly among tourists and users of rental vehicles, to prevent accidents and ensure compliance with traffic laws.
The MLA also demanded a statewide crackdown on illegal white-number-plate vehicles allegedly operating as rental taxis without the required permits. He urged the authorities to take firm action against such illegal operations, saying they create unfair competition for licensed operators and pose challenges for law enforcement.

On the issue of the proposed urbanisation of villages, Lobo reiterated that Calangute should continue under the Panchayat system. He said the government must clearly define its urbanisation policy and ensure that the identity and interests of village communities are protected before taking any decision.
Lobo maintained that strict law enforcement, action against illegal transport operations, and clarity on urban policy are necessary to safeguard Goa’s residents, tourists, and traditional village character.
