Goa Records Lowest Birth Rate Among Indian States
Goa has recorded the lowest birth rate among all Indian states, according to the Sample Registration System Bulletin for 2024 released by the Office of the Registrar General of India. The state’s birth rate stands at 10.7 per 1,000 population, much lower than the national average of 18.3. Kerala follows with a slightly higher birth rate of 11.1. The bulletin also shows that Goa has the second-lowest natural growth rate among states at 4.2, after Kerala’s 3.9, indicating slower population growth in the state. Goa has also performed strongly in infant survival, recording an Infant Mortality Rate of 7 deaths per 1,000 live births, far below the national average of 24. The state is tied with Sikkim on this indicator, while Manipur has recorded a lower IMR of 2. Goa’s death rate stands at 6.5, close to the national average of 6.4.
