YUGAANTAR GOA WELCOMES PROTECTED STATUS FOR HATKATRO KHAMB, SEEKS RETENTION OF HISTORIC NAME
PANAJI]: Yugaantar Goa has submitted a formal letter to the Director of the Directorate of Archives and Archaeology, Goa, congratulating the department for notifying the historic Hatkatro Khamb at Old Goa as a protected monument.
In the letter, Yugaantar Goa welcomed the move as an important step towards preserving Goa’s historical and cultural heritage. The organisation also urged the department to officially retain the name Hatkatro Khamb in all references and notifications related to the monument. Yugaantar Goa stated that the name Hatkatro Khamb carries deep cultural and historical significance in the collective memory of Goans and is closely associated with Goa’s colonial past and the period of the Goa Inquisition.
The letter further highlighted the research findings of P. P. Shirodkar regarding the Hale-Kannada inscription found on the pillar, which points towards links with pre-colonial Hindu temple architecture.The information was shared by Abhideep Vishnu Dessai and Rohan Dessai of Yugaantar Goa.
