Poor State of Baga Beach, with Garbage and Liquor Bottles strewn on Promenade
CALANGUTE:Baga Beach, one of Goa’s most iconic tourist spots, was found strewn with garbage and discarded alcohol bottles on Friday morning, raising fresh concerns over cleanliness and safety at the popular promenade.
an activist Walter lobo noted that broken glass bottles, plastic waste, and food wrappers were scattered along the walkway and sand, posing risks to both tourists and locals. “Baga is Goa’s brand. If we can’t keep it clean, what message are we sending to visitors?” he asked. According to activist , the garbage appears to be left behind after late-night gatherings and shack activities. He alleged that regular cleaning and monitoring have slipped, especially during the ongoing monsoon season when tourist footfall is lower but local visitors remain steady.

the activist has urged the Department of Tourism, Calangute Panchayat, and the Goa Waste Management Corporation to step up daily beach cleaning drives, install more bins, and enforce fines for littering. He also called for stricter checks on public drinking along the promenade, citing safety and hygiene issues. “Tourism is Goa’s backbone. Clean beaches are not a luxury, they are basic infrastructure,” Lobo said, adding that local stakeholders, shack owners, and tourists must share responsibility.
Residents and morning walkers at Baga echoed his concerns, saying the litter problem worsens after weekends. The issue comes at a time when Goa is pushing to rebrand itself as a high-value, sustainable destination.
