An exhibition commemorating the birth centenary of legendary Goan artist and cartoonist, late Padma Bhushan Shri Mario de Miranda, was inaugurated by Fatima Miranda Figueiredo at the Kala Academy, Panaji, on Saturday .
Organised by the Directorate of Museums, the exhibition is being held at the Black Box Auditorium and Art Gallery of the Kala Academy. It pays tribute to Mario’s enduring legacy as one of India’s most celebrated illustrators, whose sketches captured the soul of Goa and its people for over five decades. Inaugurating the show, Fatima Miranda Figueiredo,, said the centenary was not just a family milestone but a moment for Goa and India to revisit an artist who chronicled everyday life with wit, warmth, and unmatched detail.
She recalled how her father’s pen brought Goan villages, markets, festivals, and characters alive for generations of readers across the world. The exhibition features a curated collection of Mario’s original works, rare cartoons, book illustrations, travel sketches, and personal memorabilia.
Panels tracing his journey from Loutolim to national and international acclaim also form part of the display.
Special focus has been given to his iconic murals and his contributions to The Illustrated Weekly of India, Femina, and The Times of India. Director of Museums, in his address, said the centenary celebrations aim to introduce Mario’s art to younger audiences and reinforce Goa’s position as a cultural hub. He added that workshops, guided tours, and interactive sessions with artists will run alongside the exhibition. Visitors at the inauguration included artists, students, and admirers of Mario’s work. Many noted that his ability to find humour and humanity in ordinary scenes remains unmatched.
