Mapusa : A fire broke out in an open field near Alvamar dance venue at Britto Wado, Parra, on Friday afternoon, sending plumes of smoke into the air before Mapusa fire personnel brought it under control. The incident was reported at 15:46 hrs, following which a fire tender from the Mapusa Fire Station was rushed to the spot. Firefighters battled dry grass and undergrowth that had caught fire, likely due to the prevailing summer heat and strong winds. Fire officials said the team reached the site within minutes and took approximately 30 minutes to douse the flames, preventing the blaze from spreading to nearby coconut groves and residential houses at Britto Wado.
Cooling operations were carried out to ensure no reignition. No casualties or major property damage were reported. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, though officials have not ruled out the possibility of discarded waste triggering the blaze. Locals said quick action by the fire brigade averted a major incident, as the field is surrounded by houses and vegetation that could have fueled a larger fire. The Mapusa Fire Station has appealed to residents to avoid burning dry leaves or garbage in open areas during peak summer, as dry conditions can cause fires to spread rapidly.
