Strong Condemnation of Offensive Remarks Against St. Francis Xavier; Silence of Government Raises Serious Questions: Amarnath Panjikar
Panaji: Goa Pradesh Congress Committee Media & Communication Department Chairman, Amarnath Panjikar, has strongly condemned the derogatory and insensitive remarks made against St. Francis Xavier, calling them “deeply hurtful to the religious sentiments of millions and a direct attack on Goa’s syncretic cultural identity.”
Panjikar stated that St. Francis Xavier is revered across Goa and beyond as a symbol of faith, peace, and unity, and any attempt to malign such a figure is irresponsible and dangerous, with the potential to disturb communal harmony.
He further criticised the statements made by Gautam Khattar, terming them “deliberate, provocative, and divisive,” aimed at disturbing the peace and unity that Goa has preserved for generations.
Raising serious concerns over the silence of the State leadership, Panjikar questioned why Pramod Sawant has failed to issue any statement so far condemning these remarks. “Why has the Chief Minister remained silent on an issue that has deeply hurt the sentiments of Goans? Will the BJP Government in Goa act, or will it continue to look the other way?” he asked.
“Freedom of expression does not give anyone the right to insult religious beliefs or hurt the sentiments of any community. Such reckless comments must be dealt with firmly under the law,” Panjikar said.
Demanding immediate action, Panjikar urged the Government to take strict and swift steps, including the immediate arrest of Gautam Khattar, to ensure accountability and to send a strong message that hate-driven statements will not be tolerated in Goa.
He also called for an unconditional public apology and appealed to all sections of society to remain united and uphold the values of harmony and respect that define Goa.
“Goa’s strength lies in its unity in diversity. Any attempt to disturb this delicate fabric must be firmly resisted,” Panjikar added.
