FC Goa Thrash Punjab FC in First Leg of RFDL Semi-Final
FC Goa produced a dominant display to secure a resounding victory over Punjab FC in the first leg of the Reliance Foundation Development League (RFDL) Semi-Final.
The Gaurs had to endure a challenging start, with Punjab FC controlling possession for much of the opening 30 minutes. FC Goa showed great resilience during this phase, staying compact and disciplined to absorb the early pressure.
The breakthrough came in the 35th minute when a quick corner routine caught the opposition off guard. Asher Rodrigues rose highest to meet the delivery with a brilliant header, shifting the momentum in FC Goa’s favour and giving them a 1-0 lead going into half-time.
The second half began at a high tempo, with both sides attacking end-to-end. FC Goa extended their lead in the 54th minute when Prachit Gaonkar’s effort took a crucial deflection and looped over the goalkeeper. Just minutes later, Asher Rodrigues was brought down inside the box, earning a penalty which was calmly converted by Akash Konsam Singh in the 58th minute.
FC Goa continued to dominate proceedings and added a fourth in the 68th minute through a well-worked team move, finished emphatically by Ismail to cap off an impressive attacking performance.
At the other end, Lionel Daryl Rymmei played a crucial role in preserving the clean sheet, making a series of excellent saves to deny Punjab FC and frustrate the visitors throughout the game.
FC Goa now carry a strong advantage into the second leg, where they will take on Punjab FC on Wednesday, 15th April at 4:00 PM for the return leg of the semi-final at the SAG Athletic Stadium in Bambolim, as they look to secure a spot in the finals in front of the home crowd
