CCTV Cameras, Community Policing: Mapusa’s Answer to Rising Thefts

Speaking to media reporters, Mr Salim stated that robbers were trying to pounce upon the cash and as such they could not manage to rob any goods from the broken opened shops.

Mr Salim said “No doubt we have our staff on the field but under the garb

 of darkness they managed to escape and flee the  spot of the crime,”

While admitting the thefts have been committed and revealed “we have got some leads also in these.incidents and we are working on it and hope tha police will succeed in apprehending the culprits very soon.

He also informed that the Market Association came to them stating that henceforth no such instances should reoccur, so we suggested them to install CCTV cameras and we will also see to it that community policing is in place. He said there are nearly over 1000 shops there and lots of security lapses. It is very porous and there are neither watchmen nor security personnel to keep a hawk’s eye watch on the market. He also added that if there are CCTV cameras then we can trace any strangers entering and exiting the market during late hours. In these kinds of situations we cannot trace any strangers, so we urged them to install CCTV and help us in community policing. We assured them that henceforth such thefts won’t reoccur in the market. While, Mapusa police station chief Mr Navin Dessai, revealed that Mapusa market association demanded that to strengthen the night patrolling and increase the motorcycle patrolling during night time, so we told them that police will maintain naka bandhi, night patrolling besides initiating strict action on anti-social elements. In the end the market association in coordination with the Police will conduct a survey and install CCTV cameras within next 8 -days and lost faith in the Mapusa Municipal council.
