Margao: FC Goa were held to a 1-1 draw by Punjab FC in a tightly contested encounter at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi on Monday evening.
The match began as an evenly balanced affair, with both sides battling strongly across the pitch but struggling to carve out clear opportunities. FC Goa enjoyed spells of possession in the opening half but were unable to truly test the Punjab goalkeeper, as the game largely played out as a midfield contest with neither side able to gain a decisive edge.
Punjab eventually found the breakthrough just before the interval. Forward Nsungusi Effiong produced a moment of quality to curl his effort into the back of the net, giving the hosts the lead heading into the break after capitalising on one of the few clear chances of the half.Looking to shift the momentum, Head Coach Manolo Márquez made an immediate statement at the start of the second half by introducing Abdul Rabeeh and Raynier Fernandes. The early changes signalled FC Goa’s intent to push for a result, and the Gaurs began the second period with far greater attacking urgency.
The game then took a dramatic turn when Punjab were reduced to ten men. Goal scorer Effiong was shown a straight red card for a headbutt on Pol Moreno following an on-field altercation, handing FC Goa a numerical advantage with plenty of time left to play.
The Gaurs capitalised soon after. In the 53rd minute, Raynier Fernandes threaded a perfectly weighted through ball into the path of Brison Fernandes. The winger turned sharply and laid the ball off to the onrushing Dejan Drazic on the edge of the box. The Serbian forward struck the ball first time with the outside of his boot, guiding a composed finish into the back of the net to bring FC Goa level.
With momentum on their side and the advantage of an extra man, the Gaurs continued to push forward in search of a winner. There were particularly some attempts from Drazic, who found himself in promising pockets of space as FC Goa increased their attacking pressure and created more efforts towards goal in the closing stages. Brison Fernandes also came close in the dying minutes with a sharp volleyed effort as the Gaurs pushed for a late winner, but Punjab’s defence held firm to ensure the points were shared in Delhi.
The result sees the Gaurs take a point away from home after a hard-fought contest in the capital. While they remain unbeaten, FC Goa will rue the missed opportunity to close the gap on the top two. The Gaurs will now look to return to winning ways when they face Chennaiyin FC away from home next Sunday.
