Public health experts urge evidence-based regulation of nicotine gums to support smoking cessation
NEW DELHI: (Mar 4) Amid growing public debate on nicotine products, public health experts and clinicians have urged policymakers to consider nicotine gums up to 4 mg out of prescription regulations as per practices in most of the developed nations so that it becomes more accessible for smokers who want to quit the habit.
Nicotine gums — available globally in 2 mg and 4 mg strengths — have been used for over three decades as evidence-based smoking cessation aids, endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and included in the WHO Essential Medicines List.
Till one and a half years back, nicotine gums up to 4 mg was sold over the counter (OTC) under Schedule K drugs in India.
