Godrej Consumer Products’ Integrated Waste Programme Strengthens Goa’s Sustainability Journey, Diverts 5,800+ Tonnes from Landfills
Bicholim: Goa, February 19, 2026: Known for its pristine beaches and vibrant tourism, sustainability challenge of Goa often lies in its rural and semi-urban heartland. In line with its purpose-driven culture, Godrej Consumer Products Limited (GCPL), is addressing this critical gap by driving a comprehensive Integrated Waste Management Programme across the inland Talukas of Bicholim and Sattari, creating long-term, community-owned waste solutions.
Through robust partnerships with Sampurn(e)arth Environment Solutions, the Mineral Foundation of Goa, municipal councils and village panchayats, the initiative has successfully diverted over 5,800 metric tonnes of waste from landfills and recycled more than 490 metric tonnes of low-value plastics, including commonly discarded milk packets.
Historically, waste collection in these regions was inconsistent, source segregation was limited and informal waste workers operated without adequate safety or social security. GCPL’s intervention addressed these challenges through an end-to-end system—door-to-door collection, material recovery at the Bicholim MRF, secondary sorting at Harvalem and recycling at Pissurlem—ensuring traceability and accountability at every stage.
Technology-enabled monitoring through QR-code–based tracking now allows local authorities to assess collection coverage and segregation levels in real time. At the same time, sustained community engagement ranging from household visits and school programmes to cultural outreach and exposure visits to waste facilities has helped embed segregation as a daily practice.
A strong focus has also been placed on waste worker welfare. Over 1,300 waste workers are provided personal protective equipment, enrolled in social security schemes, trained in safe waste handling, and organised into Self-Help Groups, enabling dignity, financial inclusion and long-term livelihood security for a workforce that has traditionally remained invisible.
Complementing the system-level intervention, the Milk Packet Collection Initiative tackled a commonly overlooked plastic waste stream. By engaging schools and colleges, students became sustainability ambassadors, driving awareness within their households. Between March 2024 and July 2025, nearly 140 kg of used milk packets were collected and recycled—demonstrating how everyday actions can drive meaningful environmental change.
Commenting on the initiatives in Goa, Pakzan Dastoor, Head – Sustainability & CSR, Godrej Industries Group, said, “GCPL has a sustainability-focused culture where we balance business with environmental and social good. Our intent with solid waste management programs in Goa is to strengthen the local capacity and enabling a smooth transition to municipal bodies. With 5,800+ tonnes solid waste already diverted from landfills through a coloration with Sampurn(e)arth Environment Solutions, the Mineral Foundation of Goa, and municipal bodies, reflects that sustainable change happens when infrastructure, citizen participation and welfare come together.”
“QR Code–based Waste Management in Bicholim Taluka brings smart accountability to every doorstep. Each household QR ensures transparent tracking of garbage collection. It creates two-way responsibility among Panchayat, citizens, and contractors. This system strengthens monitoring and improves overall garbage collection efficiency”, said Omkar Manjrekar, Block Development Officer, Bicholim Taluka
By integrating infrastructure, behaviour change and social inclusion, GCPL’s Goa initiatives set a benchmark for waste management. It displays how companies can move beyond service delivery to become a driver of environmental stewardship, accountability and community-led transformation.
