Ash Wednesday 2026: Christian communities worldwide marked the beginning of Lent with prayers and fasting.
Panaji: On February 18, 2026, Goa’s Christian community along with the world community marked Ash Wednesday, the start of the Lenten season, with prayers, fasting, and spiritual renewal. Churches across the state held special services, where ashes were placed on foreheads in the shape of a cross, symbolizing mortality and the need for spiritual growth.
Catholics aged between 18-59 observe fasting, eating one full meal and two smaller meals, while those 14 and older abstained from meat. Believers focus on spiritual growth, self-discipline, and charitable acts. Churches offer special services, communal meals, and charitable drives, making it a significant day for the community. The Lenten season, which ends on Easter Sunday, April 5, is a time for spiritual preparation, self-examination, and penance
