Aldona MLA warns EROs against harassment during electoral roll revision
Panaji: Aldona MLA Carlos Alvares Ferreira warned Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) against harassing citizens during hearings for the Special Intensive Revision of the Electoral Roll and said false objections were being filed to delete names from the voters’ list.
Ferreira said many voters from his constituency had raised issues faced during the revision process. “I have come across numerous complaints from citizens during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of the Electoral Roll regarding the ERO, who is adamant and is asking for documents despite citizens submitting documents that are mentioned in the list issued by the Election Commission of India. I warn the ERO that he must accept the Election Commission of India’s list of required documents,” he said.
He also raised concerns over the role of Booth Level Agents during hearings. “I have also received reports that BLAs are sitting with the ARO and dictating what is to be done. I am warning the AERO that BLAs cannot be allowed inside during the hearing process,” he said.
Ferreira further said false objections were being filed against voters under Form 7. “I have also come across reports that some BLAs from neighbouring constituencies are filing false objections under Form 7 to delete voters from the list. This is a criminal offence under Section 31 of the RP Act, 1950. I will file a complaint against the BLAs who have submitted these Form 7s, and I will also approach the court, as such actions are not permissible. Those colluding with such persons will also be taken to task, as these objections claim the person does not exist or does not live at the address, which is false. People are upset and worried about this,” he said.
