“LOP Yuri Alemao Raises Alarm: Goa’s Air Quality Hits ‘Unhealthy’ Levels in Major Towns ”
Porvorim: Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao highlighted the rising Air Quality Index (AQI) in Goa’s major towns, including Panaji, Porvorim, Mormugao, and Bambolim, reporting “Unhealthy” levels between 163 and 178 in the first week of January 2026. The main pollutants contributing to this poor air quality are PM2.5 and PM10, with levels reaching 39 µg/m³ and 48 µg/m³, respectively, in Panaji
During zero hour in the Assembly, Alemao urged the government to take immediate action to mitigate the pollution, citing concerns over health issues and discomfort. He attributed the increasing pollution to unbridled urbanization, rising vehicle numbers, and ongoing construction activities in the state.
Alemao emphasized that prolonged exposure to such air quality can lead to respiratory problems, especially for vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing conditions. He urged the government to take immediate action to mitigate the pollution, citing concerns over health issues and discomfort.
