OPPOSITION STORM IN GOA ASSEMBLY: Birch Fire Tragedy Sparks Heated Protest
Porvorim: The Goa Legislative Assembly’s Winter Session got off to a stormy start as opposition legislators disrupted Governor Ashok Gajapathi Raju’s address, demanding discussion on the Birch fire tragedy that claimed 25 states Slogans, placards, and a walkout marked the protest, with opposition members clashing with marshals as they tried to enter the well of the House.
The Birch fire tragedy which occurred on December 7 ,2025 , at a nightclub in Arpora Goa, had claimed 25 lives and injuring several others and tourists . Investigations revealed that the nightclub was operating without a valid license and had failed to follow safety norms, leading to the massive fire. Several arrests were made in connection with the fire tragedy, including Saurabh Luthra and Gaurav Luthra, owners of the nightclub, who were detained in Thailand and brought back to Goa and investigations are currently going on
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant appealed for decorum, but the opposition remained firm, staging a walkout as their demands weren’t met. The Governor continued his address amid disruptions, setting the tone for a tense session
