Gaza’s Christians Find Solace in Christmas Cheer Amidst Ceasefire
Gaza – In a war-torn Gaza, Palestinian Christians are trying to hold on to the holiday spirit, despite the devastation and uncertainty surrounding them. Attallah Tarazi, 76, recently received Christmas gifts, including socks and a scarf, and joined fellow believers in singing hymns in Arabic. “Christ is born. Hallelujah,” they sang, their voices a beacon of hope in a city ravaged by conflict.
The fragile ceasefire has brought some relief, but the memories of loss and displacement linger. Tarazi, sheltering at the Holy Family Church compound, clings to his faith, saying, “I feel like our joy over Christ’s birth must surpass all the bitterness that we’ve been through.”
A church group has been touring displaced people, spreading Christmas cheer, and reminding them of the power of forgiveness and resilience. “In such a glorious moment, it’s our right to forget all that’s war, all that’s danger, all that’s bombardment,” Tarazi said, his voice filled with determination.
Despite the challenges, Gaza’s tiny Christian community is finding ways to celebrate, holding on to hope and faith in the face of adversity.
