Ferreira condemns ‘insulting’ Christmas ad, seeks govt action

MAPUSA: Aldona MLA Adv Carlos Alvares Ferreira has condemned a recent online advertisement promoting an event during the Christmas period, which he claims is “tarnishing” the festival and constitutes “an insult to Christianity”.

Ferreira questioned whether there was any agent of the BJP government involved to facilitate this event? he urged the Chief Secretary and police to take swift action and register a case against the organisers of the advertisement.

The MLA stated that the advertisement, titled “Tales of Kamasutra and Christmas celebration”, was being circulated on social media, with the event scheduled to be held in Goa from December 25–28, organised by the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh Foundation.

“There is no mention of tickets. Instead, it says a contribution of Rs 24,995 and mentions kamasutra along with Christmas. This is a complete insult to Christianity, a complete insult to Christmas, and such kinds of things are showing a depraved mentality of people who believe that we Goans are available for sale and anything can be done in Goa,” Ferreira said.

He said the incident was an attempt to stir communal unrest. “This cannot happen unless it is with the active connivance with some agent of the BJP or someone in the government who wants to facilitate these kinds of things to happen.”

Ferreira demanded immediate governmental intervention, even if the event was not ultimately held.

“I demand that the government take action to stop this and book these people who are circulating this advertisement. This is an attempt to create communal disharmony. It is the duty of the police to book even for an attempt to commit an offence,” he said.

The advertisement, according to the MLA, has sparked outrage among Goans.

“A lot of people, including Catholics and non-Catholics have contacted me and asked me what is going on in Goa. This is the way law and order is headed. From drugs to rapes to murders and dacoities, everything is freely going on in Goa. And this means that now we are going to have this also? Our Christmas is going to be tainted with sin? time has come to stop these things,” he stated.

“The manner in which these people were seeking to obtain a contribution means they were not selling tickets, which means no taxes were paid and no destination was mentioned. You had to register by making calls and then they would probably give you all the details. It was kept in secrecy and with an intention to hide,” Ferreira said.

Ferreira reiterated his demand for governmental intervention.

“I demand that the Chief Secretary and the Collectors intervene along with the police officers to stop this nonsense and take action. I also call upon each and every Goan, whoever is in their rightful senses, please let us know where this event is being held. I will join you to ensure we shut down this place. We don’t want these kinds of elements or such kinds of events being held in Goa,” the Congress MLA said.
