MAPUSA MARKET INSPECTION EXPOSES DEEP-ROOTED NEPOTISM AND NEGLECT
mapusa A shocking inspection by the Urban Health Centre (UHC) has revealed the appalling state of the Mapusa fish and meat market complex, exposing a disturbing culture of neglect and apathy among civic authorities. The market, a hub of activity and a vital part of the local economy, has been reduced to a breeding ground for disease and pestilence, with stagnant water, rotting garbage, and broken infrastructure posing a serious health risk to vendors, shoppers, and the wider community.

The inspection, led by, Urban Health Officer, found that the market lacked basic facilities, including toilets, running water, and access for persons with disabilities. The absence of essential licenses and permits, including a valid health NOC, has raised serious concerns about food safety and the risk of waterborne diseases.
Sources reveal that the market has been in a state of disrepair for years, with vendors and shoppers alike complaining about the filthy conditions and lack of basic amenities. The recent incident of a woman falling and injuring herself due to a broken tile at the entrance of the complex has sparked outrage and calls for immediate action.
The UHC has issued a final notice to the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC), directing it to clean up the market within seven days or face indefinite sealing of the premises. The notice highlights gross negligence and administrative failure on the part of the civic body, which has ignored repeated directives to improve sanitary conditions.
-“The Mapusa municipal market attracts people from all over Goa and many tourists. Keeping it clean is crucial, and vendors and shopkeepers must cooperate.” Said Mapusa Market Committee Chairman Sainath Raul,:
“The officials woke up only when the health department stepped in. The market was so filthy that I challenge MLA Joshua D’Souza to spend even 15 minutes there.” Said a concerned citizen Mahesh Rane,
Vendors and shoppers are demanding immediate action to address the crisis, calling for stricter sanitation checks and accountability from civic authorities. “It’s a shame that such a busy market is allowed to remain in this condition,” said one shopper. “The authorities need to take responsibility and ensure that the market is cleaned and maintained regularly.”
The people of Mapusa deserve better. It’s time for the MMC to take concrete action to address the neglect and apathy that has plagued the market for far too long. The health and well-being of vendors, shoppers, and the wider community depend on it.
