TOURISM UNDER SIEGE: MAPUSA POLICE URGE HOTELIERS TO PRIORITIZE GUEST SAFETY
Mapusa, Goa – In a bid to curb rising crimes against tourists, Mapusa police have taken a proactive approach, urging hoteliers, club owners, and restaurant staff to prioritize guest safety and well-being. Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mr. Wilson D’Souza, emphasized that a zero-tolerance policy towards harassment, assault, and abuse will not only ensure a safe experience for visitors but also boost business and promote tourism in the state.
Speaking at a meeting with stakeholders from the tourism industry, D’Souza stressed that hoteliers and staff should refrain from taking matters into their own hands and instead, report incidents to the police immediately. “If a guest is causing a disturbance or refusing to pay bills, do not hesitate to call us. We are here to help,” he said.
The police officer’s appeal comes in the wake of several high-profile incidents involving tourists being harassed, assaulted, or abused at popular tourist spots and establishments. The industry has been criticized for its handling of such cases, with many calling for stricter laws and accountability.
D’Souza assured hoteliers and staff that the police will provide support and assistance in case of any untoward incident, adding that a dedicated helpline number will be shared with all establishments to report any complaints. The initiative aims to foster a culture of trust and cooperation between the tourism industry and law enforcement, ensuring that Goa remains a safe and welcoming destination for visitors.
The meeting was attended by representatives from various tourism associations, who welcomed the initiative and pledged to work closely with the police to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for tourists.
