Carlos asks Khaunte come clean on IPS officer’s high handedness, demands immediate action

MAPUSA: Aldona Congress MLA Adv Carlos Alvares Ferreira on Saturday demanded that Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte come clean and to commence action against the Indian Police Service (IPS) officer whom he accused of behaving in a high handed manner in Goa.

Adv Ferreira referred to comments made by Khaunte at a press conference on Friday in which he accused an IPS officer, who he didn’t name of ‘highhandedness’ with regard to the organising of the Oceanman swimming competition at Caranzalem beach that was being held without permissions.

“Now a cabinet minister has openly accused an IPS officer of permitting this event without having proper permissions. When my colleague Amit Palekar claimed that businessmen from the coastal belt have claimed that hafta is being sent and this rate has been increased. To this Rohan Khaunte responded by saying that he will ask Amit Palekar to provide him with evidence to enable him to take action,” Adv Carlos said.

“Now in this case, Khaunte himself is making the accusation and levelling the charge. He is specific about an IPS officer. Now what action will he take? Does he require evidence for his own charge?” he asked.

“Will the CM act or pretend he knows nothing or say that it was a misunderstanding. If the CM fails to act it will further erode the faith in the government and the Goa police, which is already facing issues of complete law and order collapse, in Goa?” he said.

“When your cabinet minister is making a serious charge against an IPS officer, as CM and home minister will you take action against this IPS officer? Apart from having him booked for the offence the CM must relieve him of all duty and post him out of Goa. We don’t want such rotten people in Goa. If corruption is seen at the top, why won’t it percolate to the bottom?” he also said.

Adv Carlos noted that the cabinet minister Khaunte had made a direct allegation and had not hinted so said he suspects an IPS officer was involved.

“What is preventing the Panjim PS of not recording the statement of Rohan Khaunte and adding this IPS officer as a co-accused and arresting him just as the organiser of the event Oceanman Kapil Arora was arrested. I remind the Goa Police and the judgement of the Supreme Court in Prakash Singh Badal which clearly states that for such offences, no sanction is needed and that it is the office which gives them a cloak to carry out illegal acts,” he concluded.

I demand that immediate action be taken. If the CM fails to act, to relieve this IPS officer and shunt him out of Goa, then we know what is going on in the police department,” Adv Ferreira said.
