It is said that on this day, the god of death Yama goes to his sister for food, so the souls in hell do not have to suffer the torment of hell on this day. Also, on this day, the sister hugs her brother and prays for his long life. Let us get the scientific information about this festival, which has been going on since ancient times, through this article.
*1. Date: * Kartik Shuddhya Dwitiya
*2. History: * On this day, Yama went to his sister Yamuna’s house for food; hence this day got the name ‘Yamdvitiya’.
*3. Importance: * To avoid untimely death, the god of death ‘Yamdharma’ is worshipped on Dhantrayodashi, Naraka Chaturdashi and Yamadvitiya.
‘On this day, Yamaraj goes to his sister Yamuna’s house to eat and on that day frees the souls who are trapped in hell for that day.’
This day is a day for the souls born from the mother’s womb to express their affection for each other.
On this day, a sister who asks Shri Yamadevi for something for her brother, gets it according to her wishes. Therefore, her accounts with her brother are settled to some extent.
*4. Method of celebrating the festival*
*Yamatarpan, Yamadeepdan and praying to Yama -* To prevent untimely death, one should make the following resolution: ‘Shri Yamadharmaprityaartham Yamatarpanam karishye.’ and offer tarpan with the fourteen names of Yama. This ritual is given in the Panchang. ‘On this day, Yama should be offered a lamp. Yama is the god of death and religion. It is necessary to constantly be aware that ‘Every human being has to die’; Because that will not cause any bad deeds or waste of money by the hands of man. Then Yama would be offered a lamp and said, ‘Oh Yama, we are alert, aware like this lamp. We are offering you a lamp that is a symbol of awareness and light, accept it. We do not know when your arrival will be; therefore, we keep our reckoning in time, so that we do not have time to worry about the incomplete; because we know that you can come suddenly at any time.’
*Waving by sister to brother* – On this day, the brother should go to the sister and the sister should wave to the brother. If a woman does not have a brother, she should wave to any other man as her brother. If that is not possible, she should wave to the moon as her brother. `On this day, no man should take food from his wife’s hand at his own house. He should go to the sister’s house and give her clothes and ornaments and have food at her house. If you don’t have a close sister, you should consider any sister or any other woman as a sister and eat with her.’
*5. Let’s empower the sisters to defend themselves!*
‘Today, many sisters are raped, many have their lives destroyed. Many are even killed openly due to one-sided love. This is a symbol of the society’s ghostly, i.e., Kshatra-dharma-less mentality. We should awaken the Kshatra spirit within ourselves and become physically and mentally strong and protect our sisters. Along with this, it is necessary to encourage and train the sisters to prove themselves in self-defense. This will be the real gift of the brothers for them. Only if we take every possible step to do something for the society, nation and religion on the occasion of Deepawali, this festival will be celebrated in the true sense.’
